Our school continues to hold the Green Flag Eco award, evidencing that the environment lies at the heart of all that we do. Gardening is part of the curriculum for children with them taking a proactive lead in the development of the school grounds and in raising eco awareness through the School Council and the Eco Council.
Our very first Eco Council was formed back in 2008 and year on year, our committees have continued to play an ever increasing role in the day to day running of the school. In 2017 our Green Flag was renewed, with the children’s significant contributions to the school and the wider environment being acknowledged and praised.
We currently monitor our electrical usage, with our Eco Council taking regular readings, ably assisted by Mrs Steel, our eco champion. We continue to grow our own food for the school kitchen, working hand in hand with the kitchen staff. Over the past year food wastage has reduced as the daily weigh-ins of waste food help inform the kitchen of the popularity of different menu choices!
Every lunchtime the committee collect the blue recycle bins from around the school, emptying them into the large blue bins outside. A thorough daily examination of bins has ensured that all classes now take great care over what can and cannot go in the bin, as well as reducing the overall amount of waste.
The committee also litter pick, collect the leaves for the compost collection area, as well as ensuring the wildlife area is kept in tip top condition and is respected and cared for by children of all ages.
